Jess & Matt • Starling Lane Vineyard BC

J&M's elopement at Starling Lane in Victoria BC was truly a perfect blend of nature and romance. It was definitely a day to remember forever

Jess and Matt’s elopement at Starling Lane Vineyard in Victoria BC, was truly a perfect blend of nature and romance. Nestled on the picturesque Saanich Peninsula in Victoria, British Columbia, Starling Lane Vineyard offers an enchanting backdrop for couples seeking an intimate, charming elopement. With its sweeping views of the island’s lush greenery, rows of grapevines, and a tranquil, rustic charm, this vineyard is the perfect venue for a romantic celebration of love — just you and your partner with a handful of guests and nature’s beauty surrounding you.

Whether you're envisioning an indoor ceremony in the picturesque greenhouse, a cozy ceremony amidst the vines, or outdoor celebration at sunset, Starling Lane provides the ideal setting to say "I do."

I started working wtih Jess and Matt in 2023 and we had their elopement planned within weeks. Vendors were booked, retainers were paid, literally everything was planned and ready to go. Then we got the hiccup and a rather major one at that, which was completely 100% out of anyone’s control. We were now back at square one and now their already planned elopement was going to be in a completely different city and area of the island, which means that we need all new vendors etc. This felt completely devastating to all of us… however in the back of my mind I am a true believer that everything happens for a reason and that this would actually work out better. The two of them came together in problem-solving mode and after a quick search, found Starling Lane Vineyard, which ended up being the most incredible and suiting place for their elopement.

At Starling Lane Vineyard, there is an undeniable magic and charm to it, so after viewing it, Jess and Matt booked it right away for their elopement. The property is a tranquil atmosphere that’s perfect for an elopement with it quiet beauty, although the peacocks will say “Hi” every now and again! Their day was filled with so much magic and love and I think each and everyone of us was thankful for the hiccup that ended in bringing us all to Starling Lane Vineyard!

Jess and Matt’s elopement was a day to remember forever and I am truly thankful for our little hiccup.

Once the venue was booked, everything else fell into place. It was truly meant to be. Starling Lane Vineyard truly provides everything you need for the perfect day and more. With endless photo ops and their absolutely incredible dahlia flower garden, Starling Lane Vineyard is a perfect blend of natural rustic beauty with the elegance and romantic charm that Jess and Matt were looking for. They were truly able to focus on their elopement day and what truly matters: celebrating their love, enjoying each and every moment, and soaking in the beauty around them.

Top 5 locations to elope on Vancouver Island

Whether you grew up here or have visited as a tourist, there is no denying that Vancouver Island hosts some of the most breathtaking and scenic views in all of Canada (we’re not biased or anything). Its west coast magic prevails in rain or shine making it the perfect adventure elopement spot for those couples that can brave the elements. We feel so incredibly blessed to call this little piece of paradise home! With its natural wonderland of boundless beauty, it truly is the most versatile and romantic place to get hitched. If you’re dreaming of an unforgettable elopement on Vancouver Island, here are our top location recommendations for when you vow forever:

  1. Mystic Beach is located an hour from Victoria, 1.5 hours from Ladysmith and is a short 2 km hike to get to. It is a truly 'Mystical' elopement spot complete with a cascading waterfall onto the beach and no shortage of scenic views of the rugged west coastline.  If you plan your elopement accordingly, you can even access the caves which will give you endless exploring! *Pro-tip: I even have a shortcut so the hike in only a short 1km down to the beach

2. Strathona Provinicial Park truly has it all for the adventurous, outdoorsy couple. From the rugged mountain wilderness to the beautiful lakes it is one of my favorite locations for couples to tie the knot. The exploring is endless at Strathcona (we love to always be on the hunt for mushrooms and wildflowers) as it is one of BC’s oldest parks. It is located central Vancouver Island and due to it being so large and off off the beaten path, we can almost assure you that your elopement there will be private and intimate!

3. Saratoga Beach is one of the most underrated locations on the island and I always look forward to visiting or photographing an elopement there. With its laidback beach vibe it is beyond picturesque, especially at sunset… seriously the sunsets are truly epic and endless. Located just outside of Comox, Saratoga has a white sand beach and gorgeous mountain veiws of the mainland. An added bonus with Saratoga Beach is there are brand new condos for rent for your elopement. So all you have to do it step outside your cabin and say “I DO!”

4. Tofino. Need we say more?! It is one of the most sought after destinations on the West Coast. With it’s endless sandy beaches, old growth rainforests, small town charm, and storm watching it is a true representation of life on Vancouver Island. Located on the west coast of the island, Tofino is a surfer’s paradise and elopement haven. One of Tofino’s charms is the fog and the cloudy skies, for the reason that when the sun eventually makes an appearances, it is truly glorious and lights up the sky. It is worth the foggy days just to experience the sunsets!

5. Iron Mine Bay is located in East Sooke Regional Park and just a short walk through a beautiful old-growth rainforest leading out to the rocky beach.  With scuba divers and locals ambling through, it is a peaceful and serene elopement location that is a true representation of the rugged coast. With the mossy old growth trees and the bouldering black rocks covered framing the beach, it has a sort of quaint magic to it and is the perfect place for a west coast elopement.

Vancouver Island offers a wide range awe-inspiring backdrops to make your elopement dreams come to life.  Whether your vision involves venturing off the beaten path, embracing tranquility or seclusion, you're sure to find the perfect spot to exchange your vows on this magical island. Say "I do" in paradise and let me help you bring your elopement vision to life!

Why you need Engamement Photos • Vancouver Island

Engagement sessions are an exciting and meaningful part of your elopement journey, and if you’re planning to elope on Vancouver Island, the stunning backdrop makes this even more special. But beyond the beautiful landscapes, there are countless reasons why hiring a professional photographer for your engagement session is an investment that will enhance your entire experience, not just in the moment, but for years to come. From your engagement session, to the moment you’re reciting your vows to each other — I want to capture the magic of these moments and bottle them for you so you can look back on these milestones for the rest of your lives.

If you’re on the fence about whether or not to book a photographer for your engagement session, here's why it's such a valuable choice:

1. Capture the Magic of Your Love Story

Your engagement session is a celebration of your relationship, your love story, and this exciting chapter in your life. Having a photographer capture this moment allows you to preserve the raw, emotional connection between you and your partner.

As you laugh, hold hands, and share intimate moments in one of the most beautiful places on Earth—whether it's a misty forest, rugged coastline, or charming small town—your photographer will document these candid, authentic moments.

A professional photographer knows how to capture the essence of your relationship, telling the story of your love in ways that will remind you of the magic every time you look at the photos.

2. Get Comfortable in Front of the Camera

Many couples feel nervous or awkward in front of the camera, and that’s perfectly normal. But the engagement session is the perfect opportunity to get comfortable being photographed before the big day.

When you work with a professional photographer, you'll receive gentle guidance on how to pose naturally, where to look, and how to relax. This will help you feel more at ease during your elopement day photos, where you’ll be in the spotlight and want to look and feel your best.

As an experienced photographer, I will coach you through the session, giving you helpful tips to create authentic, flattering, candid images while making sure you feel comfortable and confident.

3. Create Stunning Photos in a Dreamy Location

Vancouver Island is a photographer’s dream, with its breathtaking beaches, towering forests, and dramatic mountain ranges. Whether you’re looking for coastal views, quiet lakesides, or rugged terrain, this island offers some of the most stunning locations for engagement photos.

By hiring a photographer who knows the local landscape, you’ll have access to hidden gems and iconic spots that will elevate your photos. Imagine a serene beach at sunset, or a walk through moss-covered trees in an old-growth forest. The natural beauty of Vancouver Island will give you the most incredible backdrop for your engagement photos, which will be forever tied to the memories you made there.

Plus, a local photographer can help you pick the best locations, times of day for lighting, and the best seasons for shooting, ensuring that your engagement photos are truly one-of-a-kind.

4. Get Professional-Quality Photos

Sure, you can ask a friend or family member to take your engagement photos, but there’s a world of difference between snapshots and professionally crafted images. A professional photographer brings years of experience, high-quality equipment, and a keen eye for detail to every shoot.

Here’s what you can expect from a professional photographer:

  • Lighting Expertise: Whether shooting in natural light or with added flash, a photographer knows how to make the most of lighting conditions, which can make or break a photo.

  • Composition Skills: A professional knows how to frame the shot, use depth and angles creatively, and avoid distractions, ensuring your photos are as visually striking as they are meaningful.

  • Post-Processing: After your session, a skilled photographer will edit your photos to enhance their colors, sharpness, and overall look, giving you polished, magazine-worthy images.

Your engagement photos deserve to be more than just a quick snap—they should be beautiful, timeless images that you’ll cherish forever. And hiring a professional ensures that you get that quality and attention to detail.

5. Build Trust with Your Photographer Before the Wedding

Your engagement session offers a unique chance to get to know your photographer and develop a relationship before your wedding day. It’s a great opportunity to experience how your photographer works, understand their style, and see how they make you feel during a photoshoot.

The more comfortable you feel with your photographer before the wedding, the smoother the wedding day photos will go. You’ll already have an established rapport, know how they direct you during a shoot, and have a better understanding of their style and approach.

Additionally, your photographer can help you with any last-minute ideas for the wedding, giving you confidence in their ability to capture the big day just the way you envision.

6. Create Lasting Memories That You’ll Treasure Forever

Your engagement photos are not only for your wedding website, invitations, or save-the-dates. They are also cherished mementos that will last long after your wedding day. You’ll look back at them in the years to come, and they’ll bring you right back to the emotions, excitement, and love you felt during that special time.

In addition to framed prints in your home, your engagement photos can be used in your elopement album, on thank-you cards, or even as part of a slideshow if you are having a reception at a later date. They are a tangible reminder of the beginning of your journey together, and investing in professional photos means you’ll have beautiful images to preserve those memories forever.

7. Practice for your Elopement Day

The engagement session is essentially a “rehearsal” for your elopement day photos. You get to see how you both look in photos, how you interact naturally, and how your photographer handles the session. This practice run helps you both feel more confident when it’s time for the big day.

When you hire a photographer for your engagement session, you’re giving yourself the opportunity to perfect the dynamics, movements, and poses that will translate into better wedding photos. The session allows you to learn how to interact with your partner in front of the camera in a way that feels comfortable and authentic, setting the stage for a more relaxed and enjoyable wedding day experience.

8. Celebrate Your Love in a Fun, Stress-Free Way

At the end of the day, your engagement session should be a fun and enjoyable experience that celebrates your love for one another. By hiring a professional photographer, you can rest easy knowing that the entire process will be managed seamlessly—from planning the shoot to getting the photos you’ve always dreamed of.

Engagement sessions are not about posing and looking perfect; they’re about sharing a joyful moment with your partner and capturing the love you feel. A photographer who knows how to make you laugh, relax, and just be yourselves will turn your engagement session into an unforgettable experience.

My Final Thoughts…

Booking a photographer for your engagement session on Vancouver Island is more than just a chance to get beautiful pictures—it’s an opportunity to create lasting memories, get comfortable in front of the camera, and have a professional guide you through the process.

From the stunning scenery to the authentic moments you’ll share with your partner, your engagement session will be a celebration of your love—and it deserves to be captured in a way that reflects that beauty and joy.

If you're ready to make your engagement session as memorable as your love story, I’d love to help! Let's connect and start planning your dream engagement photoshoot on Vancouver Island.

Capture the moments before your I do’s. It is all a part of your love story and worth celebrating! When you book an elopement with me, you can save on your engagement session & I’ll help you capture both moments exactly the way you dreamed them to be!

Josh & Joanna

Through this outpouring of love, came their neighboring Soggy Bottom farm’s generous offer to host and help J & J’s dream elopement come back to life.

J & J’s week leading up to their elopement was nothing short of stressful when on the week of their big day, tragedy struck; the main barn at the breathtaking Yellow Point Farms, where their special day was set to take place, was engulfed in flames in the middle of the night. With the damage and devastation caused by the fire, the venue was understandably no longer a possibility for their elopement (cue the stress for all of us) . J & J’s dream farm elopement reality (complete with baby goat photo ops) was looking glib. Following the devastating loss, the community of Yellow Point rallied together in a beautiful display of support and kindness, coming to the aid of the farm owners and helping to piece together the aftermath of the disaster. Through this outpouring of love, came their neighboring Soggy Bottom farm’s generous offer to host the elopement and help J & J’s dream elopement come back to life.

And dreamy it was. Despite the gentle rain, the last-minute venue change was nothing short of enchanting. The farm wowed with a stunning and meticulously manicured garden pond as well as a breathtaking view of the lake where J & J shared their vows surrounded by a few of their nearest and dearest. Following the ceremony, the two were a delight to photograph throughout many stunning backdrops around the property. Their relationship’s caring and endearing nature shined as the two had their portraits taken, unbothered by the rain continuing to sprinkle down on them. Having faced the last-minute changes and challenges to their day, J & J handled their first challenge as a nearly-wed couple them with the utmost ease and grace.

In a touching display of kindness, Yellow Point Farms owners even transported their adorable week-old baby goats to the site to grant the couple’s wish to have photos with them. They truly helped being the joy and magic to the day, even amidst the difficulties they were facing. We would like to extend a special thank you to both Yellow Point Farms and Soggy Bottom Farm for their unwavering kindness and support in ensuring that J & J’s elopement was everything they dreamed of. Their selflessness and generosity helped to make their special day truly unforgettable!

Smith Lake Farm Elopement

Beneath the trees, a charming glamping site overlooking the lake set the stage for N&H’s heartfelt elopement at Smith Lake Farm in Comox Valley

COMOX VALLEY, BC

Beneath the trees, a charming glamping site overlooking the lake set the stage for Natalie and Harry’s beautiful and heartfelt elopement ceremony at Smith Lake Farms in picturesque Comox Valley. A beautifully crafted floral arbor stood tall beneath the shaded site in the warm June sun with nothing but the sound of the wind and occasional bellowing bullfrogs of the nearby lake.

With only their two children present and the soulful "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay" by Otis Redding playing after their first kiss, Natalie & Harry’s elopement was a true intimate celebration of the special love this little family shared. There were many special moments of laughter, heartfelt vows and a few tears shed by all those present (including us!), each one emphasizing the couple's unwavering love for each other. Their added beautiful gesture of presenting cedar roses to their children during their ceremony thoughtfully symbolized their commitment to growing together as a family.

Natalie and Harry’s elopement was a true honor to be a part of, reminding us of the inherent significant of the work we are so passionate about and LOVE to do! On that day, we were reminded of the joy and purpose in curating such magical moments for couples and their families as they embark on their journey as a married couple from that day forward. We extend our warmest wishes to Natalie and Harry as they start their forever together!

Top Five Reasons To Elope

Top five reasons to elope… even better on Vancouver Island!

The big question - why elope? Your wedding day should not about pleasing others with their preferences and opinions (oh, the unsolicited opinions *sigh*). It should be 100% about you and your partner and the start of your married life together. It is easy to get swept up in the moment and get carried away when planning, adding costs here and there to try to make it as special and extravagant as humanly possible. However, ultimately what is important is the commitment between you and your partner and really being present during this special moment of your lives and in the moment throughout the day:

  • COST: First things first, the average standard wedding in British Columbia in 2021 was $28,000 (and that’s on the low end- yikes). Even trying to keep it small it ends up costing a fortune – money that could be of better use towards starting your new married life together, right? Cutting down on unneeded costs also allows for more practical splurges on whatever will help bring your vision to life (the dress, your photographer, florals anyone?).

  • LET’S GET INTENTIONAL: Couples who elope value the importance of a more intentional experience rather than a big party hosting people your parents made you invite (to name a few). Nevermind the stress and pressure it puts on couples trying to please everyone when you realistically simply cannot. Your wedding day should be about exactly that- YOU. You as a couple and your commitment to one another, in the way you both dream celebrating it. The only other person you need to decide any details with is your partner (sorry mom). Our elopements also allow for up to 20 guests which allows your people to still be present for your day if you wish!

  • WEDDING TRADITION ISN’T YOUR THING: As much as one can appreciate a run-of-the-mill cookie cutter grandiose wedding, they tend to be pretty repetitive as far as what to expect. If you’ve found your way to our website, chances are you want to do your wedding with your own flair and style without all the traditional fluff that most people feel is necessary on their big day. Do you want to wear anything but a white dress? Do you want to walk down an aisle without all eyes on you? Do you want a short and tailored ceremony celebration that’s not followed by a bouquet toss? Then you’ve come to the right place. We LOVE helping you bring your distinct vision to life, however you want it!

  • LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION: Elopement location options are truly endless when it’s just you and your partner calling the shots. On Vancouver Island especially, there are limitless landscapes and backdrops you can choose from and hey, the most stunning spots come with no deposit required;). You can dream as big as you want and pick some place that is special and meaningful to you as a couple or you can choose an intimate location that you have always been wanting to visit. So why not make it somewhere truly unique and adventurous?

  • STRESS, NO THANKS: You want to avoid any wedding stress or drama: Let’s be honest here… for those of you that have planned a wedding, we are going to bet that 99% of you were stressed out at some point. From dealing with vendor availability to venues being booked up years in advance, to having to help plan all of your guests with travel or accommodation, safe to say many of us have gotten to a breaking point in which we ended up at this very question; is it even worth it?! Is it worth being this stressed out?! The answer for us is always NO! Your wedding day should be filled with joy, laughter, happy tears, and most of all love!

Working with us, the stress of all the moving parts of planning, contacting vendors and day-of coordination involved with a large wedding is really non-existent.  We plan your elopement experience in four simple steps… two of which include a detailed, but not overwhelming questionnaire and then two planning phone calls.  Of course, you are welcome to be as hands on or off as you wish.  Leave the worries and planning to us (we actually love it haha) and the excitement to you.  We are here to make your day as memorable and unique to you as a couple! Drop us a line and let us get started on your dream day!

Intimate Sunset Elopement •Tofino BC

This Tofino BC elopement was so intimate and beautiful, with the couple's heartfelt vows and their sunset champagne toast!

We met C&D in the parking lot and as soon as they got out of the vehicle, we knew we were going to have a beautiful evening! We walked out to Pettinger Point, in Tofino, with the two of them and their two friends and D was definitely on a mission. We finally caught up to him along the boardwalk and he just stood there with the hugest smile on his face… the two of them had a board dedicated to them from their friends and family! They were both so proud and honoured to have such a beautiful memory.

We all walked out to the top of Pettinger Point and the view was absolutely breathtaking! We began their ceremony right away as nerves were flying high and they were so excited to get the show on the road. As they were saying their vows, the sun had begun its descent and we got to witness the magic.

Elopements like C&D’s are the reason we love our elopement planning jobs so much! From the planning to photographing their elopement, it is so incredible to finally reach the couples ceremony date. When we can see all of the work come to life; we watch the couples stresses melt away and they get to truly enjoy their moments of union. This Tofino BC elopement was so intimate and heartfelt, with the couple's beautiful vows to their sunset champagne toast! Congratulations again C&D

What does it mean to Elope?!

What does it mean to elope?!

Have you ever heard someone say, “We eloped!” and literally had no idea what the heck they were talking about?! Well look no further! It is one of the questions we come across very often so if you’re still stumped, read on below!

e·lope

/əˈlōp/

1.       run away secretly in order to get married

2.       To slip away; escape

The definition has evolved so much with the rising popularity of couples opting for a more intimate and whimsical route to make their love official. While beautiful in their own way, larger weddings naturally tend to pull focus away from what the day should actually be about; the sacred union of two people who can’t wait to share their lives together. Don’t get us wrong, we LOVE a big celebration, but guests seem to be getting the better end of the deal. Guests get to reap all the benefits of the endless hours of planning, budgeting and stress just to get to just show up and enjoy themselves on the big day.

Couples tend to get caught up with societal expectations and pressures to stretch out their budget for a huge party (on an even huger budget). It tends to become about the guest experience rather than a day that should be about the two people planning the event. The process can be arduous and undoubtedly expensive with so many options to consider from catering to floral to venue and so many more small decisions to be made (no pressure, right?).

Eloping has become wildly popular with couples that want to do their day their way. Eloping allows for a more intentional and truly magical experience with minimal stress (or none at all if you prefer 😉) leading up to the big day. It allows couples to cut through all the red tape and bring the focus back to what the day should truly be about; YOUR LOVE!!

You deserve to have your wedding day vision come true. In your way and on your budget. Whether you envision vowing forever next to crashing ocean waves, on a peaceful canoe ride on a secluded lake or deep in a forest surrounded by nothing but the trees - we’ve got you covered. Just show up in your Sunday best (or better than that!) and let us handle the rest.

So why not escape with us and elope on Vancouver Island?!
